8/18/26: The Best-Ever Description of Being Old

Some days are better than others . . . that’s just a fact of life.

The last couple of days haven’t been among my better ones. It’s nothing specific; just kind of weary, out of sorts, a bit achy from the heat and the low barometric pressure . . . as though there isn’t quite enough of me left to make it through the day.

And I happened to find the perfect description of what I’ve been experiencing in a quote from one of the all-time great fantasy characters, old Bilbo Baggins himself:

“I feel thin, sort of stretched, like butter scraped over too much bread.”

– J.R.R. Tolkien, “The Lord of the Rings #1: The Fellowship of the Ring”

Bilbo Baggins

That’s me today, summed up in one brief sentence. But with luck, a little Haagen-Dazs, and a good night’s sleep, tomorrow will be better.

Just sayin’ . . .
