I know I’ve focused on Volodymyr Zelensky a lot lately, but he is so irresistibly quotable, I just had to add one more today.

While Donald Trump builds gold-plated monuments to himself, imprints his name on buildings to which he has no legitimate claim, and splashes his face on every available vertical or horizontal space he can find, this is what Volodymyr Zelensky had to say this week about the legacy he would choose for himself:

“I just want to walk the streets after the war so that they [the people of Ukraine] don’t want to kill me and hate me.”

Speaking to The Wall Street Journal, he acknowledged that he has made mistakes, and said that a wartime president is required to make hundreds of decisions and agreements, many of which are difficult or uncomfortable, but are necessary for the good of the country.

He stressed that friends, colleagues, personal relationships, and individual loyalties cannot be placed above the needs of the country, and that no decision will satisfy everyone.

He also said that presidents should not be immune from criticism. He does not expect monuments or universal praise when the war is over and he leaves office; what he wants is simply “to remain in Ukraine, walk among his people and know that — despite his mistakes — he did not betray them when their country needed leadership most.” [Id.]

Now, that is what I call a President.
