5/25/26: Quote of the Day: On Remembrance

Today is Memorial Day in the United States — a day when families and friends enjoy some free time together, away from work, ushering in the unofficial start of summer.

But it is, first and foremost, a day that is dedicated to the remembrance of those who have given the “last full measure of devotion” for their country throughout the 250 years of her existence, from the American Revolution to the present day.

In honor of the occasion, I found what I think are the perfect words of thanks and remembrance in the writing of an English poet and dramatist, Laurence Binyon, as he paid tribute to the fallen heroes of World War I:

“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.”

– Laurence Binyon, “For the Fallen”

Enjoy the long weekend, everyone. But let’s not forget what our country is really about, what all of those young men and women gave their lives to preserve, and the battle in which we are now engaged to save our Republic from those who would destroy her.

“I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
– Emma Lazarus, The New Colossus

Just sayin’ . . .
